One afternoon Dan and I decided to check the boys out of school early for an impromptu family day. We drove up to Salt Lake to the planetarium. I bought tickets for the IMAX 3D movie Born to be Wild, a movie about people who rescue orphaned elephants and orangatans and release them back into the wild when they are old enough to survive. It was adorable.
After the movie we explored the planetarium. The boys were fascinated with all the exhibits. It was a great day.
This two-story ball machine was a big hit.

Skipping school for something fun AND educational is always acceptable, I think. I would probably be prone to pulling mine out for a baseball game or something equally non-educational.
