It's Bitter Sweet

Preston is a chatterbox.
People often ask me if he is talking yet.
My answer: "Yeah, the trick is getting him to stop."
He loves to label everything. When we read books he names objects in the pictures. When we are at the store he points out all the Grandmas, Grandpas and babies.
Cute, right?
The problem is that he will repeat the name of the person/object until someone validates him by repeating it back. The longer it takes you to acknowledge/understand him the louder he gets.
This is awesome in church. This week, during the sacrament he kept yelling,
"Baby Turtle, Baby Turtle. Baby Turtle!
I finally turned around to see the baby in the pew behind us holding a stuffed turtle.
"Yes, Preston. The baby has a turtle."
After that he wanted to say 'hi' to his babysitter sitting in front of us. The problem was the he can't say 'Angela' very well so she didn't know he was talking to her (either that or she was attempting to be reverent in church by ignoring the yelling of the child behind her.) Of course, he kept saying " hi awjawa" over and over and over.
Sometimes I can convince him to keep his voice down by saying. "Quiet for Church."
But that only works occasionally.
A sure fire way to shut him up is to say, "Quiet, the baby is sleeping." He will immediately stop yelling and look around to locate the sleeping infant.
I can usually keep him semi-controlled during sacrament by letting him color. This week he was only interested in coloring on the benches, hymnbooks, and his arm. When I told him to only color on his paper he stuck his crayon up his nose. Nice. I knew if I took the crayon away from him he would start screaming.
"Color Paper! Color Paper! Color Paper!"
Luckily I was saved by a pre-teen boy sitting next to us. He had an old-school Casio calculator in his scripture case. Preston spotted it. He thought it was the greatest thing ever invented. Preston sat quietly for several minute pushing the buttons, pretending to call people, dropping it under the bench so he could crawl under to retrieve it, and putting it in and out of the boy's scripture case (which Preston told me was a wallet.)
Remind me to put a calculator in the diaper bag before next Sunday!

I can totally imagine Preston yelling in Sacrament. That sounds like its great fun for you!!!

I am getting way too close to that on Sundays with Vika. The best thing to keep her occupied is to have her stand on the bench facing the people behind us. She distracts them while she bangs her face on the bench and says "Ow". Either that or treats. I am really getting close to cutting her off because she just eats the entire 3 hours.

Oh I totally relate to you. My little blessing just turned 2 and sacrament these days gets interesting. I have tried everything to get her quiet at times. It's always the hardest when my husband has to help the YM pass sacrament. That's when I have to remind her that he can't come here he's helping. I'm going to try the calculator too. What a great idea. Good luck next sunday.
